Abstract

DEMETER is a soft X-ray beamline at the SOLARIS National Synchrotron Radiation Centre, designed for high-resolution studies of magnetic materials   using   tunable,   variable-polarization   radiation  in the 100–2000 eV range generated by an elliptically polarizing undulator. The beamline consists of two complementary end-stations, i.e., (i) a spectroscopic photoemission and low-energy electron microscope, and (ii) a scanning transmission X-ray microscope. The capabilities of the beamline are demonstrated through studies of X-ray magnetic circular and linear dichroism in NiO layers grown on Fe3O4, revealing element-specific magnetic contrast and interfacial coupling. Furthermore, investigations of strontium hexaferrite nanostructures using a scanning transmission X-ray microscope enable spatially resolved analysis of magnetic domains and chemical composition. These examples illustrate DEMETER's capability for probing magnetic order and nanostructure with high spatial and spectral resolution. The beamline, operated in collaboration with the Jerzy Haber Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the AGH University of Science and Technology, provides a versatile platform for advanced research in nanoscience and magnetism.
